The Union Cabinet has increased the creamy layer ceiling for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category to ₹8 lakhs per annum from the existing ₹6 lakh for Central government jobs.
‘Creamy layer’ is the ceiling which bars economically and educationally developed members of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) from availing reservations in employment.
Those who are classified under this section of OBC will not be given reservation in Central Government employment. The present ceiling of Rs 6 lakh came into being in 2013, which means person having annual income more than 6 lakh rupee are not eligible for reservation.
Now, The ministry of social justice and empowerment had proposed that OBC families which earn more than Rs 8 lakh per year should be classified as ‘creamy layer’ -— the ceiling which bars members of the other backward classes from availing reservations in employment.
