- The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, seeks to provide a 33% reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and assemblies.
- This can be implemented only after a delimitation exercise is completed, using data from the latest census conducted after the passage of the Bill.
- The next delimitation exercise, or redrawing of constituency boundaries, is scheduled to be held in 2026.
- The bill was officially introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996 by the UPA government.
- It was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee chaired by Geeta Mukherjee.
- Women account for almost half of India's 950 million registered voters but make for only 15% of parliament and around 10% of state legislatures.
