- An ordinance for holding indirect elections to the post of mayors and chairpersons of municipalities in Tamil Nadu has been promulgated by Governor Banwarilal Purohit, following a State Cabinet decision.
- Better accountability, collective responsibility are cited as reasons to change the mode of elections from direct to indirect for top civic posts.
- The ordinance amended
- The Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919
- The Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920
- The Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1971
- The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act, 1981
- It would be applicable to 15 municipal corporations, 121 municipalities and 528 town panchayats.
