- President Ram Nath Kovind recently laid the foundation of a memorial dedicated to the 1817 Paika Rebellion.
- Paika memorial is to mark 200 years of the Paika Rebellion.
- It will come up at Barunei Hill in Odisha’s Khurda district.
About Paika Rebellion
- Paikas under the leadership of Baxi Jagabandhu, the hereditary chief of the militia army of the Gajapati King of Khurda (a kingdom near Puri), rose in rebellion in March 1817.
- It was an uprising against colonial rule that predates the rebellion of the sepoys in 1857.
