Pakistan won a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) by more than two thirds vote.
Pakistan was elected for the term 2018-20. The election in the 193-member Assembly was by secret ballot, with a simple majority required.
There were five candidates contesting for four Asia-Pacific seats on the Council.
Apart from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Qatar also won seats on the Council.
UNHRC
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations System inter-governmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world.
Its 47 seats are filled by member states elected for three-year terms.
The seats are distributed among the UN's regional groups as follows:
13 for Africa
13 for Asia
6 for Eastern Europe
8 for Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC)
7 for the Western European and Others Group (WEOG)
