B C Khanduri will head the recently constituted parliamentary standing committee on defence.
The committee will examine operational preparedness of armed forces and review accidents involving strategic defence assets and also assess the procurement policy relating to defence equipments and look into quality of ration provided to forces especially in border areas.
The main objective of the standing committees is to secure more accountability of the Executive (that is., Council of Ministers) to the Parliament, particularly financial accountability.
Each standing committee consists of 31 members (21 from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha).
The term of office of each standing committee is one year from the date of its constitution.
Out of the 24 standing committees, 8 work under the Rajya Sabha and 16 under the Lok Sabha. And parliamentary standing committee on defence is under Lok Sabha.
