For first time, arch rivals India and Pakistan are taking part in Peace Mission, a multi-nation counter-terror exercise in Russia to be held in September 2018.
The decision was taken at SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting held in Beijing, China.
The military exercise is going to take place under the framework of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Peace Mission counter-terror military exercise will be held in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
About SCO
SCO is a Eurasian economic, political and security organisation headquartered in Beijing, China.
It was founded in 2001.
The full members of the organization are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Pakistan.
Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status at present.
India and Pakistan joined SCO as full members on 9 June 2017 at a summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Earlier India and Pakistan were in the position of Observer Countries in SCO.
China had founded this grouping in 1996 and then it was called as Shanghai Five. It comprised of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
After Astana Summit Declaration in 2005, SCO has emerged as a regional security organization.
The groupings main objective is military cooperation between members.
