- Former General Secretary CPI (M), late EMS Namboodirpad was the first among leaders to refuse the Padma Award.
- Also, 90-year old veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee, also known as Sandhya Mukhopadhyay refused an offer of a Padma Shri award this year.
