- The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the setting up of public Wi-Fi networks all over the country for strengthening the Wi-Fi services for the public.
- This Public Wi-Fi Access Network Interface set up by the government will be known as PM-WANI.
- The PM-WANI will promote the growth of Wi-Fi networks in the country.
- This is very much similar to that of the PCO model (PCO is Public Call Office).
- The public Wi-Fi services are to be provided through Public Data Offices.
- The National Digital Communication Policy, 2018 has set the target of reaching internet to 5 million people by 2020 and 10 million by 2022.
