The Union government has decided to provide free ration to over 81 crore people for five more years till December 2028 under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana scheme.
It is aimed at ensuring accessibility, affordability, and availability of foodgrains for the targeted population.
PMGKAY was originally launched in 2020 to address the challenges posed by the pandemic.
It provided 5 kg of free foodgrains per beneficiary per month, in addition to the subsidized foodgrain under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
As of December 2022, PMGKAY was integrated into the NFSA, offering free ration for one year.
The economic cost of providing 35 kg of rice and wheat to Antyodaya families under PMGKAY is borne by the central government.
