- The Union government has decided to provide free ration to over 81 crore people for five more years till December 2028 under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana scheme.
- It is aimed at ensuring accessibility, affordability, and availability of foodgrains for the targeted population.
- PMGKAY was originally launched in 2020 to address the challenges posed by the pandemic.
- It provided 5 kg of free foodgrains per beneficiary per month, in addition to the subsidized foodgrain under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
- As of December 2022, PMGKAY was integrated into the NFSA, offering free ration for one year.
- The economic cost of providing 35 kg of rice and wheat to Antyodaya families under PMGKAY is borne by the central government.
