- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has initiated ‘Project NETRA’.
- Netra (Network for space object Tracking and Analysis) is an early warning system in space to detect debris and other hazards to Indian satellites.
- It gives India its own capability in space situational awareness (SSA).
- Netra can spot, track and catalog objects as small as 10 cm, up to a range of 3,400 km and equal to a space orbit of around 2,000 km.
- NETRA will also be aided by
- Multi-Object Tracking Radar (MOTR) at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota
- Telescopes at Ponmudi, Tamilnadu and Mount Abu, Rajasthan
Defensive Applications
- SSA would help us to understand motives behind any suspicious orbit changes of other satellites and to know if they were spying on or harming our spacecraft.
