Pygmy False Catshark

  • A new deep-sea shark species named Pygmy false catshark, was discovered in the northern Indian Ocean.
  • This was discovered by scientists from the US and Germany in association with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute of Kochi (CMFRI).
  • This is the first such discovery in India since the Mangalore hound shark in 2011.
  • The scientific name of the species is Planonasus indicus – ‘planus’ meaning flat and ‘nasus’ meaning nose.
