  • The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to set up a pyrolysis plant to manage plastic waste and produce fuel from it.
  • The GCC produces about 500 tonnes of plastic waste every day.
  • The pyrolysis process breaks down the organic compounds in plastic under extremely high temperatures in the absence of oxygen and converts them into fuel.
  • The fuel is sold for Rs 25-35 per litre and 2 kg of plastic waste is required to generate one litre of the fuel.
  • The fuel can be used in cement, steel, glass, brick factories and also in boilers.
  • It’s also used in trucks, generator sets, steam ships and other vehicles.
