The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to set up a pyrolysis plant to manage plastic waste and produce fuel from it.
The GCC produces about 500 tonnes of plastic waste every day.
The pyrolysis process breaks down the organic compounds in plastic under extremely high temperatures in the absence of oxygen and converts them into fuel.
The fuel is sold for Rs 25-35 per litre and 2 kg of plastic waste is required to generate one litre of the fuel.
The fuel can be used in cement, steel, glass, brick factories and also in boilers.
It’s also used in trucks, generator sets, steam ships and other vehicles.
