- Bharat Chodo Andolan or August Kranti Movement was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee on August 8, 1942.
- The movement was started on August 9, 1942 in Gowalia Tank.
- It is also known as August Kranti Maidan.
- On this day, Gandhi gave a 'do or die' call to the people of India in a final push to make the British quit.
- The first half of the movement was peaceful with demonstrations and processions.
- But the second half of the movement was violent with raids and setting fire at government buildings and railway stations.
- After the arrest of major leaders, young Aruna Asaf Ali presided over the AICC session.
