  • An international team of geologists and seismologists has created a newly refined map of Zealandia.
  • It is considered to be the ‘eighth continent of the world’ that is beneath the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Zealandia is a vast continent of 1.89 million sq miles (4.9 million sq km) that is around six times the size of Madagascar.
  • If classified as a microcontinent, Zealandia would be the world's largest micro continent.
  • It is believed that 94% of Zealandia under the sea.
  • The remaining 6% make up New Zealand and surrounding islands.
  • Zealandia is also substantially larger than the Arabian Peninsula (3,237,500 km2 or 1,250,000 sq mi), the world's largest peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent (4,300,000 km2 or 1,700,000 sq mi).
