- The government has notified the Rent Courts for all 32 districts in the State.
- Chennai district has been allotted 7 rent courts.
- This is in accordance with Section 32 of the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017.
- As per the Act, it is mandatory to enter into written tenancy agreements.
- The agreement should be registered with the designated jurisdictional Rent Authority.
- Rent Courts “alone” will have the power to hear and decide applications relating to disputes between landlords and tenants.
- There will be no jurisdiction of civil courts in settling such disputes.
