  • According to a study by Geology department of Anna University, 1.5 sq. km of land along the Chennai coastline will be submerged by 2100.
  • The sea would be moving closer to the land by 0.5 metres every year because of the increase in sea level.
  • For the past 50 years, a 3.6mm rise in sea level a year has been reported in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The rise in the Bay of Bengal appears to be higher than in other Asian regions.
  • The increasing sea level would also force the water table along the coastline to move upwards.
  • Sea water intrusion would replace the freshwater at the bottom of the aquifer.
