Sagar Maitri Mission – 2

  • INS Sagardhwani has embarked on a two-month long SAGAR MAITRI Mission-2 from the Southern Naval Command in Kochi.
  • It has been designed and developed by DRDO’S Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi.
  • The prime objectives of the Sagar Maitri Mission are
    • Data collection from the entire North Indian Ocean
    • Focussing on the Andaman Sea and adjoining seas
    • Establishing long-term collaboration with eight Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) countries in the field of ocean research and development.
  • It commemorates the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of India’s lone ‘research ship’ INS Kistna which conducted International Indian Ocean Expeditions during 1962-65.
