- Jnanpith recipient and Kannada litterateur Chandra shekhar Kambar (81) was elected as President of the Sahitya Akademi.
- He will serve as president of the Akademi for a period of five years. Hindi poet Madhav Koushik has been elected as vice-president.
- Kambar is the third Kannada writer to head the country’s premier literary institution.
- He is recipient of various awards including Jnanpith Award (2010), Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Shri, Kalidas Samman.
Sahitya Akademi
- It was founded in March 1954 and it is India’s National Academy of Letters.
- It is headquartered in Rabindra Bhavan in Delhi.
- It is an organisation dedicated to promotion of literature in languages of India.
- It is the central institution for literary research, publication and promotion in the country.
- It is only institution that undertakes literary activities in 24 Indian languages, including English.
