- The Sangeet Natak Akademi on September 15 announced special one-time awards to 84 artists.
- It is commemorating 75 years of India’s independence.
- This is awarded to, who are above the age of 75 years and haven’t been accorded any national honour in their career so far.
- These Awards is a national honour bestowed by the country on performing artists, teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts, said Sandhya Purecha, chairperson of the Akademi.
- Awardees from Tamil Nadu:
- Achalapuram Chinntambi – Nagasvaram
- Purusai Subramanuim – Terukoothu
- Sundaresan Ramamurthy - Theatre (Acting)
- V.A.K Rangarao - Dance Music (Scholar & Documentation)
- R. Ramani - Carnatic Veena.
