Sardar Sarovar Dam – India’s largest dam

  • Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada - world's second biggest concrete gravity dam after America's Grand Coulee - has been inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on September 17.
  • The Sardar Sarovar dam is intended to provide drinking water and irrigation facilities for 18 lakh hectares of land.
  • The dam’s reservoir is spread 214 kilometers upstream in the Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • The Sardar Sarovar Project is one of the largest water resources project of India covering four major states - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • The project will also help take water from the dam to the Indo–Pak border in Gujarat to fulfil the water needs of BSF soldiers.
