Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada - world's second biggest concrete gravity dam after America's Grand Coulee - has been inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on September 17.
The Sardar Sarovar dam is intended to provide drinking water and irrigation facilities for 18 lakh hectares of land.
The dam’s reservoir is spread 214 kilometers upstream in the Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
The Sardar Sarovar Project is one of the largest water resources project of India covering four major states - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The project will also help take water from the dam to the Indo–Pak border in Gujarat to fulfil the water needs of BSF soldiers.
