  • The Supreme Court ruled that the powers of the NIA are not restricted to probing offences mentioned in the schedule of the NIA Act or accused committing such “scheduled offences”.
  • NIA Act, 2008 specifies categories of scheduled offences that NIA can investigate.
  • The scheduled offences include offence under
    • Explosive Substances Act, 1908
    • Atomic Energy Act, 1962,
    • Anti-Hijacking Act, 1982,
    • SAARC Convention (Suppression of Terrorism) Act, 1993 and
    • Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 etc.
