- This acute infectious disease was caused by the parasite Orientia tsutsugamushi.
- Scrub typhus spreads through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites).
- It is a vector-borne disease and is usually reported in the rainy season during November-July.
- The common symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, body ache and a black, inflamed mark on the skin.
- Scrub typhus is predominantly found in Southeast Asia, its associated archipelagoes, northern Australia, and Japan.
- It was first described in 1899 and extensively studied from 1906 to 1932.
