Sikkim celebrated its 44thStatehood Day on May 16.
As per the arrangement of 1950, India assumed responsibility for communications, defence and foreign affairs, as well as the "territorial integrity" of Sikkim.
On 14 April 1975, a referendum was held in which Sikkim voted to merge with India.
On May 16, 1975, Sikkim was officially merged into the union of India as the 22nd
Initially the 35th Amendment laid down a set of conditions that made Sikkim an "Associate State", a special designation not used by any other state.
A month later, the 36th Amendment repealed the 35th Amendment and made Sikkim aa a full state.
On April 29, 2019, the Chief Minister of Sikkim Pawan Kumar Chamling set the new record of being the longest-serving chief minister (23 years 4 months and 17 days).
Last year, the state was conferred with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) Future Policy Award 2018 also known as “Oscar for Best Policies” for being the world’s first 100 percent organic state.
