- Sir Syed Ahmed Khan is known for propagating modern education among Muslims and advocating several reforms for the community.
- He established Scientific Society at Ghazipur in 1864.
- He also started publishing Tahzib-ul-Akhlaq in 1870 to instil the modern consciousness among the Muslims.
- In 1875 he laid the foundation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as Madrasa-tul-Uloom with seven students.
- On January 8, 1877, the foundation of Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College was laid.
- In 1920, this college got the status of Aligarh Muslim University.
