- Japan’s space agency, JAXA, has announced the end of its lunar lander operation after losing communication with the uncrewed spacecraft.
- Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) or the "Moon Sniper" as it has been nicknamed for its landing precision.
- It landed on the lunar surface eight months ago.
- With this, Japan became the fifth nation to achieve a soft landing on the moon.
- However, SLIM landed on the lunar surface at a wonky angle, so its solar panels were left facing the wrong way.
- Once the sun's angle shifted, the SLIM lander came back to life for two days.
- At that time, it carried out scientific observations of the lunar crater with a high-spec camera.
