- According to the Start-up India portal, 29,681 start-ups have been registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) so far.
- This is three times higher than the startups registered till March 2018 (8,939).
- This data is shared by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- The Indian startup ecosystem is currently the third-largest globally after the US and China.
DPIIT
- The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade was established in 1995.
- It has been reconstituted in the year 2000 with the merger of the Department of Industrial Development.
- Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is responsible for formulation and implementation of promotional and developmental measures for growth of the industrial sector, keeping in view the national priorities and socio-economic objectives.
