State of Climate Services 2020 Report

  • The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released the State of Climate Services 2020 Report.
  • It was released on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction - October 13.

Highlights

  • One in three people are not adequately covered by early warning systems.
  • In the past 50 years, more than 11,000 disasters have occurred and have caused weather, climate and water-related hazards.
  • The disaster involves 2 million deaths and economic losses of US $ 3.6 trillion.
  • By 2030, the number of people taking international humanitarian system could increase by 50% at a cost of around US$ 20 billion a year.

WMO

  • The organisation was established under the International Meteorological Organization founded in 1873.
  • The World Meteorological Convention of 1947 formally established the World Meteorological Organization.
  • The WMO comprises of 193 countries and territories and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • It is responsible for promoting international cooperation on atmospheric science, hydrology, climatology, and geophysics.
