  • Around 733 million people or 1 in 11 people faced hunger globally in 2023.
  • The world is far off track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, Zero Hunger.
  • Between 713 and 757 million people were estimated to be undernourished in 2023.
  • This is approximately 152 million more than in 2019 when considering the mid-range (733 million).
  • An estimated 28.9 percent of the global population were moderately or severely food insecure in 2023.
  • The percentage of the population facing hunger continues to rise in Africa (20.4 percent), remains stable in Asia (8.1 percent) and shows progress in Latin America (6.2 percent).
  • In 2023, around 2.33 billion people globally faced moderate or severe food insecurity.
  • The estimates of adult obesity show a steady increase over the last decade, from 12.1 percent (2012) to 15.8 percent (2022).
