  • Delhi has emerged as the top destination for migrant workers joining India’s tech-enabled gig economy. Bengaluru comes distant second.
  • Delhi and Bengaluru have added 560,600 and 252,300 people respectively to its gig economy in the second six months of the financial year 2018-19.
  • The gig economy is led by food delivery firms Swiggy and Zomato, and ride hailing firms Uber and Ola.

How it works?

  • In a gig economy, temporary, flexible jobs are common.
  • Companies hire more independent contractors and freelancers instead of full-time employees.
  • Employees work with little job security and few benefits.
  • It undermines the traditional economy of full-time workers who rarely change positions and instead focus on a lifetime career.
