After Indian Independence on 15 August 1947, the Madras Presidency became the Madras Province.
As a result of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the state's boundaries were re-organized following linguistic lines.
Tamil Nadu was created on 1 November 1956 with the name Madras State.
On July 18, 1967, a resolution moved by former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai was adopted by the State Assembly to rename the then Madras Presidency as Tamil Nadu.
