- During the Tamil Nadu Budget 2023-24, creation of new wildlife sanctuary in Erode district called 'Thanthai Periyar Animal Sanctuary' was announced.
- This is the 18th wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.
- There are two existing wildlife sanctuaries in the district - Vellode Birds Sanctuary and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR).
- In the proposed sanctuary, the animal populations would mainly comprise elephants, tigers, leopards, panthers, wild boars, and deer.
- There are 21 different mammals, 139 bird species and 118 types of butterflies that would also inhabit.
