- The Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Genetic Analysis Laboratory at DMS campus in Chennai.
- For the first time, a State has set up its own genetic laboratory in India.
- The lab will help authorities look for variants of SARS-CoV-2.
- The COVID-19 samples were sent to the Union Government-run genetic analysis laboratories in Karnataka and Telangana.
- Tamil Nadu has sent all samples to the Bengaluru-based Instem as per recommendations from the Centre.
- Instem is part of INSACOG (a consortium of 10 labs that track the presence of variants in Covid samples).
