- Tenkasi has been carved out of Tirunelveli as the 33rd district of Tamilnadu.
- The district officially came into existence on November 22, 2019.
- Tirunelveli district was originally formed in 1790 by the British.
- Tuticorin was carved out of Nellai district during the rule of Puratchi Thalaivar Dr.MGR in 1986.
- The newly-inaugurated district has Tenkasi and Sankarankoil revenue divisions, eight taluks, five municipalities, 224 village panchayats and 251 revenue villages.
