- Veteran Communist leader R Nallakannu (96) has been chosen for the Thagaisal Thamizhar Award of the Tamil Nadu government for 2022.
- This will be awarded during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
- Nallakannu began his fight against British rule at the age of 11 (1936).
- He was 12 when he works for the Congress in the 1937 elections.
- He joined the Communist party in 1944 and started working for the Jana Sakthi in Chennai.
- CPM leader N Sankaraiah was the first recipient of this award.
