The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers – May 29

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed on 29 May of every year.
The day offers a chance to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilian personnel’s invaluable contribution to the peacekeeping works of UN.
It honours more than 3,800 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948.
The first UN peacekeeping mission was established on 29 May 1948.
It was mandated to monitor the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbours.
The day is observed since 2003.
Continuing relevance
The theme for 2019 is “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace”.
Protection of civilians has increasingly been at the heart of UN peacekeeping.
More than 90% of UN peacekeepers are engaged in just 8 countries to protect civilians. They are
