  • Fast Bowler Mohammed Shami has become the fastest Indian to claim 100 wickets in One-day Internationals. Mohammed Shami achieved this feat in his 56th ODI game.
    • The record was held by Irfan Pathan who had reached the 100-wicket mark in 59 ODIs.
  • The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his speech at the First IBSA Gandhi-Mandela Memorial Freedom Lecture in New Delhi.
  • The government of Uttarakhand has obtained the permission to develop the tulip garden in Pithoragarh district at a cost of Rs 50 crore. It will be the 2nd Tulip garden in the country after the one located in Srinagar of Jammu & Kashmir.
    • The Tulip Garden will be developed by ONGC, under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
  • The Insurance regulator IRDAI has set up a panel to identity domestically Systemically Important Insurers (SII) and put in place an enhanced regulatory framework for them.
  • The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) awarded social impact award to Tetra Pak India, the world’s leading packaging and processing solutions provider under the category ‘Sustainable Environment category’.
    • The award recognizes Tetra Pak’s leading efforts in setting up a sustainable ecosystem.
  • The Delhi government has decided to introduce the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers based on the recommendations of the National Commission on Farmers (NCF) headed by MS Swaminathan.
    • The National Commission on Farmers (NCF) was constituted on November 18, 2004 under his chairmanship.
  • The National Tourism Day is celebrated every year in India on January 25 to raise the awareness about the importance of tourism for the country’s economy.

  • The National Martyr’s Day or Sarvodaya Day was observed on 30 January to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The Former defence minister Geroge Fernandes (88) passed away due to prolonged illness. He served as the Defence Minister in the year 1998. During his regime as the Defence Minister, Fernandes oversaw the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 and the Kargil war in 1999.
