Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019

  • The Union government has released draft rules framed under this Act.
  • In the draft it has done away with the requirement of a medical examination for Trans persons applying for a certificate of identity.
  • The Magistrate would issue a transgender identity certificate and card
  • It will be based on an affidavit by the applicant, “but without any medical examination”.
  • States will be responsible for “timely prosecution of individuals” who committed crimes against transgender.
  • State governments will have to set up a Transgender Protection Cell under the District Magistrate.
