Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin launched the construction of Turkey´s first nuclear power plant in the Mediterranean Mersin region.
TAEK (Turkey atomic energy authority) has granted Russian builder Rosatom a construction license to start work on the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.
Once completed the power station will provide 10 percent of the electricity needs of Turkey.
The first stage is due to come online in 2023, the 100th anniversary of modern Turkey´s founding, and be completed entirely in 2026.
The Akkuyu plant will become the 56th nuclear plant under construction in the world.
