University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked 123 Deemed-to-be-Universities to drop the word 'University' from their names.
The move is based on Supreme Court’s order that said that the use of word 'University' by Deemed-to-be universities is in violation of the Section 23 of the UGC Act.
Institutions that fail to adhere to the order will face necessary action in accordance with the UGC (institutions deemed-to-be-universities) Regulations, 2016.
Tamilnadu has 28 Deemed universities.
The deemed-to-be Universities have been asked to recommend a replacement word for the word “university” in their institutional name within 15 days of time to the UGC.
