UGC forbids usage of term “University”

  • University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked 123 Deemed-to-be-Universities to drop the word 'University' from their names.
  • The move is based on Supreme Court’s order that said that the use of word 'University' by Deemed-to-be universities is in violation of the Section 23 of the UGC Act.
  • Institutions that fail to adhere to the order will face necessary action in accordance with the UGC (institutions deemed-to-be-universities) Regulations, 2016.
  • Tamilnadu has 28 Deemed universities.
  • The deemed-to-be Universities have been asked to recommend a replacement word for the word “university” in their institutional name within 15 days of time to the UGC.
