- The event was established by UN's Department of Public Information in 2010.
- It is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity.
- It also aims to promote equal use of all six official languages of the United Nations.
- These are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
- The days are as follows
- Arabic (18 December)
- Chinese (20 April)
- English (23 April)
- French (20 March)
- Russian (6 June)
- Spanish (23 April)
- In 2020 the Portuguese language was added as UN Portuguese Language Day on 5th May.
