  • India was recently elected to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council’ (UNHRC).
  • UNHRC is the main body of UN charged with promoting and monitoring human rights.
  • India secured 188 votes out of 193 in the Asia-Pacific category and won the seat to UNHRC with highest votes among all candidates.
  • The 18 new members were elected by the absolute majority through a secret ballot. Countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the Council.
  • The new members will serve a term of three years beginning January 1, 2019.
  • This was the 5th time India has been elected to UNHRC, previously was elected 2006-2009, 2011-2014 and 2014-2017.
