India was recently elected to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council’ (UNHRC).
UNHRC is the main body of UN charged with promoting and monitoring human rights.
India secured 188 votes out of 193 in the Asia-Pacific category and won the seat to UNHRC with highest votes among all candidates.
The 18 new members were elected by the absolute majority through a secret ballot. Countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the Council.
The new members will serve a term of three years beginning January 1, 2019.
This was the 5th time India has been elected to UNHRC, previously was elected 2006-2009, 2011-2014 and 2014-2017.
