UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture – June 26

  • The United Nations aims toward the complete eradication of torture from all over the world.
  • First, on June 26 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II.
  • It was the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights.
  • The second convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment was made effective on June 26, 1987.
  • In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in this regard.
  • The 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
