- Around 50 countries have ratified the UN Treaty to ban Nuclear Weapons.
- UN officials said the 50th ratification from Honduras had been received
- This has triggered the treaty into force.
- The Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the first multilateral binding instrument of nuclear disarmament.
- It bans the use, development, production, testing, stationing, stockpiling and threat of use of such weapons.
- It was adopted by the 193 member UN General Assembly in July 2017 with the approval of 122 countries.
- The major nuclear powers such as Russia, United States, Britain, France and China opposed the treaty.
- India along with Pakistan, North Korea and Israel abstained from voting for the treaty.
