  • In an unprecedented move, Iran has been expelled from the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in a vote on which India abstained.
  • The US proposal at the UN Economic and Social Council to remove Iran from the panel received 29 votes.
  • There were eight votes against and 16 abstentions in the 54-member elected body.
  • Iran has been rocked by protests since the September due to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained by the country's morality police.
  • The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established in 1946.
  • It is the instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
