  • The food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released this report, under the framework of FAO’s Green Urban Oases Programme.
  • 35% of the world’s largest cities (including New Delhi, Mexico City etc.) are built on the world’s dryland.
  • In all, they are home to more than 2 billion people, 90 percent of them in developing countries.
  • Urban policies have yet to incorporate forestry and greening strategies in the majority of dryland cities.
  • Currently, more than half of the global population lives in cities and 95 percent of urban growth between now and 2050 is expected to take place in the global South.
  • Drylands are lands with an aridity index of less than 0.65.
  • Aridity index is the ratio between average annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration.
