The food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released this report, under the framework of FAO’s Green Urban Oases Programme.
35% of the world’s largest cities (including New Delhi, Mexico City etc.) are built on the world’s dryland.
In all, they are home to more than 2 billion people, 90 percent of them in developing countries.
Urban policies have yet to incorporate forestry and greening strategies in the majority of dryland cities.
Currently, more than half of the global population lives in cities and 95 percent of urban growth between now and 2050 is expected to take place in the global South.
Drylands are lands with an aridity index of less than 0.65.
Aridity index is the ratio between average annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration.
