Vaccine drive for cervical cancer

  • In a significant step that can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer, the government is set to roll out a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign for girls in the 9-14 years age group.
  • The immunisation drive is planned in three phases over three years.
  • India accounts for about a fifth of the world's cervical cancer cases.
  • With about 1.25 lakh new cases and 75,000 deaths each year.
  • Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India, after breast cancer.
  • About 83 per cent of invasive cervical cancer cases are attributed to HPV 16 or 18 in India.
